“Heart and Greed”: Is This the Reason Why Bosco Wong Betrayed His Family?

“Heart and Greed”: Is This the Reason Why Bosco Wong Betrayed His Family?

The TVB anniversary drama Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3> is approaching its last two weeks of broadcast, and fans have questions to ask. The drama—the third installment to the successful TVB franchise known for its melodramatic family narrative—hasn’t quite yet reached the climax of the story. Though the two families of Wong and Hui are at discord, fans of the series are expecting members of the Wong family to turn on each other at any minute.

And the wait won’t be long.

In a new teaser clip released by TVB, Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), who plays the younger brother of Louise Lee (李司祺), battles against own his family in court. What happened, and why the sudden change in Bosco?

Apparently, Bosco’s sudden change in attitude had all stemmed from his trip to Malaysia. Bosco, who was never interested in business and only wanted to spend his time meeting women, slept with a woman who was the younger sister of a Malaysian triad boss. Though Louise pulled strings to get him out of danger, Bosco fell off a cliff and injured his spine, which rendered him unable to ambulate. He eventually learned how to walk again, but the injury made him impotent.

Bosco’s injury lead him to reconsider his meaning in life. Upon witnessing the power of Asia’s top ten wealthiest individuals, Bosco decided on working his way to earn that title as well, even if it takes to betray his family.

Bosco Wong Has Good Chemistry with Annie Liu

Bosco Wong Has Good Chemistry with Annie Liu

Since leaving TVB last year, Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) is keeping busy with a variety of work. In addition to filming the new Shaw Brothers web series, Guardian Angel <守護神>, he is also busy managing his restaurant business. In the new year, the 37-year-old actor will begin filming for the Mainland Chinese series, I Know Your Secret <我知道你的秘密>, and also has plans to step foot in the music industry.

Recently, Bosco was spotted filming an outdoor scene for Guardian Angel. Also on site was the series’ main female lead, Annie Liu (劉心悠). For her role, Annie not only physically trained to be more fit, but also chopped off her long hair to sport a more tomboy look. The on-screen couple appeared to have a lot of chemistry, as they were able to complete their scenes in quick takes.

Bosco was seen surrounded by a host of assistants and was even given a company car. Despite his status as Shaw Brothers’ “big brother”, Bosco remains humble and often hangs out with costars Michael Miu (苗僑偉) and Benz Hui (許紹雄) on set and during breaks.

Bosco Wong Secretly Dated TVB Variety Star for Five Months

Bosco Wong Secretly Dated TVB Variety Star for Five Months

It seems like more of Bosco Wong’s (黃宗澤) love life is being slowly leaked to the public.

In a blog post by food critic Bonnie Chu (朱庭萱), who stars in the TVB cooking show Chef Minor 3 <我係小廚神3> and known for being the student of Steve Lee (李家鼎), she revealed that she had dated Bosco for about five months in late 2001 to early 2002. Bosco was only a rookie at the time, and was about a year into his debut at TVB.

“He was good to me. I’ve met his mother, even his father who no longer lived with him, his god sister, and his godmother. He also met my mother. I ate dinner with his family all the time… he was still doing EYT (Enjoy Yourself Tonight) then, and although he wasn’t earning much, he would always try to pay for most of our meals. We ate cheap food. He would borrow my car, but this is what couples do all the time.”

According to Bonnie, her reason of splitting with Bosco was because he was younger than her, and therefore she lacked a sense of security with him. It was a difficult breakup, and it took her over three months to get over it.

“He wasn’t very responsible. Maybe it’s because he was so young at the time… or maybe it was because I earned more than him, so I couldn’t find a sense of security with him. He also thought I nagged him too much… so we decided to break up. Out of all my past relationships, this one was the most difficult to get over. I didn’t get over it until I went to Japan to watch the World Cup. When I came back, everything felt normal again. Why did it hurt so much? Maybe it was because there were misunderstandings when it happened…”

Nonetheless, the two remained friends after the breakup. All misunderstandings between them were settled about a year and a half after the split, when they encountered each other by chance at a nightclub. “We played a dice cup game together,” said Bonnie. Since then, the couple-turned-friends would occasionally meet up for meals.

“Heart and Greed” Ratings Fall; Viewers Want Smarter Dramas?

“Heart and Greed” Ratings Fall; Viewers Want Smarter Dramas?

Despite the hype and buzz for TVB’s Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3>, the show’s ratings continue to slip. The total ratings for its second week of broadcast were 21. 5 points, which includes regular television and online viewers. In stark contrast to the record breaking ratings of the show’s predecessors Heart of Greed <溏心風暴> and Moonlight Resonance <家好月圓>, the third installment failed to sustain viewers’ interest.

Heart and Greed featured the return of its veteran cast, featuring Ha Yu (夏雨), Louise Lee (李司棋), Michelle Yim (米雪), and Susanna Kwan (關菊英)Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Vincent Wong (王浩信), Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), and Eliza Sam (岑麗香) also add to the cast’s appeal.

The strong cast, however, failed to cover the flaws in Heart and Greed’s weak script. Were viewers tired of dramas centering around feuding families? In the last decade, many dramas centered around feuding families have been a hit, including the American TV series, Game of Thrones. Many popular Korean dramas also featured feuding families as well, but added more thrilling aspects to its plot such as corporate maneuvers. However, Heart and Greed’s depiction of family members fighting for corporate control only featured the constant arguments among its boisterous female cast; it did not feature new handling of an overused theme.

Combining comedy and paranormal elements,The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的> was praised for being refreshing. Unlike The Exorcist’s Meter’s steady ratings, Heart and Greed will likely not see a rise in viewership if the storyline continues the way it is. If TVB maintains its habit of churning out dramas according to formula and keeping the plots as simple as possible, the station is failing to keep up with the changing of times and viewers’ more sophisticated tastes.

2017 TVB Anniversary Awards Predictions

2017 TVB Anniversary Awards Predictions

The 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards is just around the corner, and with half of the nominees for Best Actor and Actress already revealed, it is time for some major TV King and Queen predictions.

For this season, the 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards will not be held until January 2018—perhaps this extended time is to make room for anniversary dramas My Ages Apart <誇世代> and Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3> to run for the race. My Ages Apart, which stars Bobby Au-yeung (歐陽震華) and Moses Chan (陳豪), won’t air its last episode until January 12, 2018. Heart and Greed will end its run on January 19, 2018.

For this reason, it seems highly likely that Bobby Au-yeung, Moses Chan, and Heart and Greed’s Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) and Ha Yu (夏雨) would make it into the top five Best Actor nominations for their performances in their respective dramas. This dampens Vincent Wong (王浩信) and Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) chances to win TV King, despite their popularity.

Though Ali Lee (李佳芯) won Best Actress for her role in Legal Mavericks <踩過界> back in October in Singapore, the possibility of her making it into top five nominations at the anniversary awards is not high. Ali Lee’s Best Actress nomination is not for her performance in Legal Mavericks but in My Ages Apart, which is not getting the same amount of buzz.

TV Dramas: Bad Boys No Longer the Trend

Once upon a time not so long ago, bad boys were something that all drama-loving girls would fall for. From Meteor Garden’s <流星花園> Dao Mingsi to Devil Beside You’s <惡魔在身邊> Ahmon, bad boys were the trend that defined idol dramas of the 2000’s.

But as we officially hit the late 2010’s, it appears that bad boys are no longer the main act for business. Starting with 2011’s In Time with You <我可能不會愛你>, the “sweet boy”—or warm boy (暖男)—became the one where all girls would fall for. Gone were the days when girls would chase after angsty boys who were broken and mistaken; now all they want is someone who is kind, loving, and supportive.

This transition from bad boy and good boy isn’t just happening to Taiwan and Korea—its influence is affecting Hong Kong dramas too. Manipulative bad boys like Bosco Wong’s (黃宗澤) Sheldon in 2016’s Two Steps from Heaven <幕後玩家> got more hate than love, while simpler characters like Kenneth Ma’s (馬國明) Ma Kwai in The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的> is getting all the love letters. In fact, Kenneth’s good, obedient image is the reason why he is still so popular with girls, despite not having the handsome looks of Bosco Wong nor the athletic image of Vincent Wong (王浩信).

The formula for popularity is changing, and it’s exciting to know what would happen next.

“Heart and Greed” Gave Bosco Wong a Lot of Stress

“Heart and Greed” Gave Bosco Wong a Lot of Stress

The cast of TVB’s upcoming anniversary drama Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3>, including Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) and Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), showed up in Kornhill to promote their new drama. Heart and Greed is the third installment to Lau Ka-ho’s (劉家豪) Heart of Greed <溏心風暴> franchise, and is a co-production with China’s Penguin Pictures.

At the promotional event, Bosco made an entrance with nine other women, which is a nod to his flirty character in the series. Bosco admitted that it isn’t easy to play a playboy, as he had to film many intimate scenes with a lot of his female costars. Most of the actresses were either married or the wife of a good friend. He also had to film an intimate scene with Crystal Fung (馮盈盈) after their first meeting.

Interestingly, Bosco had no stress filming kissing scenes with Priscilla, who is not only his good friend but also the girlfriend of Bosco’s close friend Edwin Siu (蕭正楠).

“It’s all me,” said Priscilla. “I’m the one who’s pursuing him. He has no pressure, but I do. It’s to the point where I was worried that I’d violate him.”

“Especially at the end,” said Bosco. “She just keeps on trying to eat me.”

“I tried,” expressed Priscilla. “He’s like my game. He’s really hard to eat.”

“Our relationship on the show is actually very much like our relationship in real life,” revealed Bosco. “[Priscilla] was the girlfriend of a close friend, but the friend in the show passed away, so there is a wall between us.”

At the mention of TVB’s “Limit Sexual Themes Order”, Bosco said, “I just came back from the Mainland so I’m not sure what’s going on. Does that mean TVB won’t be doing anniversary galas anymore? Are male artists also included in this order? I had to take off my shirt a lot for this drama!”

Heart and Greed premieres on November 27, 2017. It also stars Louise Lee (李司棋), Ha Yu (夏雨), Michelle Yim (米雪), Susanna Kwan (關菊英), Vincent Wong (王浩信), Eliza Sam (岑麗香), Michael Tong (唐文龍), Sharon Chan (陳敏之), and a guest appearance by Steven Ma (馬浚偉).
