Kenneth Ma On How to Build Trust with GF: “Don’t Make Her Feel the Last in Line”

Kenneth Ma On How to Build Trust with GF: “Don’t Make Her Feel the Last in Line”

Various TVB artistes including Kenneth Ma (馬國明) made an appearance in Yuen Long earlier today to film an episode of TVB’s new variety program The Exorcist’s Game <降魔的捉妖遊戲>. Kenneth, star of the hit TVB show The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的>, said he was never good in games, sharing, “I always lose when it comes to card games, but I’m okay with things like [Chinese] chess.”

When it comes to doing activities on his leisure time, Kenneth said he enjoys playing soccer. “If there is a week when I don’t have to work, I will go to the field to play some soccer.” What about spending time with his girlfriend Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎)? “I won’t be playing soccer all day long.”

When reporters jokingly asked Kenneth to choose between Jacqueline and soccer, he thought for a moment and said, “I want to get to know her better first. She’s not a very clingy or curious person by nature, so I feel very comfortable around her.” Kenneth added, “I think communication is very important between two people. You don’t want to make the other person feel like they’re last in line. You need to take the initiative to make the other person feel how important she is to you.”

Speaking about the upcoming Valentine’s Day, which is a day after his birthday, Kenneth said he will be spending both of those days with work. “I think it’s a great gift to be able to work on the day of my birthday. I’m very thankful for every job I take.”

Kenneth Ma Knows What Jacqueline Wong Wants

Kenneth Ma Knows What Jacqueline Wong Wants

TVB actress Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎) turned 29 last Tuesday, and her boyfriend Kenneth Ma (馬國明) was there to celebrate it with her. The Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計深宮計> actress refused to disclose what Kenneth gave her as a gift, insisting that it’s a secret. Asking if the gift was upon her request, or if it was something that Kenneth had just decided to give, Jacqueline smiled and said, “It was a bit of both.”

Reporters pointed out that Kenneth is known for his silliness and cuteness (天然呆), so it seemed out-of-character for Kenneth to be able to figure out what his girlfriend wanted. Jacqueline said, “He’s a very simple person. The longer we are together, the more he knows about what I want.”

Speaking about upcoming Valentine’s Day, Jacqueline said she expects to be working that day. As her schedule hasn’t been finalized yet, it is hard to plan upcoming dates. Jacqueline also revealed, “[Kenneth’s] birthday is right before Valentine’s Day, so it’s hard to plan.”

After Valentine’s Day will be the Chinese New Year, and Jacqueline said she will be visiting Kenneth’s family. She has already met Kenneth’s family, and both of their families did come together to celebrate Jacqueline’s birthday. It was a casual meet-up, and Jacqueline said Kenneth’s family takes very good care of her.

Vincent Wong, Kenneth Ma’s Feelings After TVB Anniversary Awards

Winning the TV King award based on his well-received performance in Legal Mavericks <踩過界> Vincent Wong (王浩信) opened up about the struggles during the earlier days in his career.

Recognized for his acting talent and rising in ranks over the last few years, Vincent said the road to success was definitely not an easy one. Recalling the days when he and C-Kwan (C君) did not even have money to buy cheese buns and when his bank account balance was in the double digits, Vincent said, “I was really angry at myself back then. [How long was this period of struggle?] One to two years. I only had income during some days. I’m thankful that my family took care of me during this time and didn’t expect me to bring home a lot of money.”

Continuing to work hard in the new year, Vincent already started filming for his new crime thriller drama Fist Fight <兄弟>. Asked if he will ask for a salary raise, Vincent said, “As long as it’s suitable; I’ll let the company take care of it.”

Kenneth Ma Reflects on Losing TV King

Losing the TV King race again this year, Kenneth Ma (馬國明) expressed that he is not disappointed and is happy for Vincent. Winning the My Favorite Male Character award for hit series, The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的>, Kenneth laughed, “I’m already happy that I got two awards. I understand why some fans felt bad for me and I’m very thankful.” Asked if he felt the My Favorite Male Character award was just a consolation prize, Kenneth said, “Of course not! Any type of reassurance for my TV character is a big prize to me.”

Besides planning to celebrate the excellent ratings of the award show that night, which peaked at 29 points, TVB senior executive Felix To (杜之克) revealed that the company hopes to strengthen presence in the Taiwanese, Singaporean, and Malaysian markets by incorporating more join ventures with Mainland China. Adding a total of 10 joint productions to their TV lineup this year, Felix hopes to widen TVB’s recognition in the Asian TV market in the new year.

2017 TVB Anniversary Awards: Vincent Wong Wins Best Actor; Natalie Tong Wins Best Actress

2017 TVB Anniversary Awards: Vincent Wong Wins Best Actor; Natalie Tong Wins Best Actress

The 2017 TVB Anniversary Awards concluded on January 21, with Vincent Wong (王浩信) and Natalie Tong (唐詩詠) winning Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. Joel Chan (陳山聰) won Best Supporting Actor, while Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗) won Best Supporting Actress. The race this year was especially tight, as the media swayed in different directions over potential wins prior to the awards ceremony.

Best Actor: Vincent Wong for Legal Mavericks

Winning the Best Actor award for Legal Mavericks <踩過界> at Singapore’s Starhub TVB Awards in October, Vincent Wong was once again honored at the TVB Anniversary Awards. In his ten-year career at TVB, Vincent has slowly worked his way up from supporting roles to main lead.

Crying emotionally while accepting his Best Actor award, Vincent said, “When my bank savings was only in the double digits, thanks to TVB8 for asking me to host a music variety program, and made me be in high demand. Thanks to my family in giving me so much love under different circumstances. No matter how physically [tired] I am, you give me a safe haven to come back to so I can focus on my work. Thanks to my parents who allowed me to pursue my dream although I have not given them a dollar in the last thirteen years. Thanks to my wife YoYo Chen(陳自瑤)who has taken such good care of our home! Also, I would like to thank my grandfather.”

Best Actress: Natalie Tong for My Unfair Lady

Ali Lee (李佳芯) and Jessica Hsuan (宣萱) won Best Actress awards in Singapore and Malaysia respectively, which drummed up speculation that either actress would repeat their victory at the TVB Anniversary Awards. However, this week the media reported that Natalie Tong extended her TVB contract in exchange for the station’s top award. While the 36-year-old shot down the rumors, Natalie managed to break through the competition.

Natalie was emotional when she stepped to the podium for the Best Actress award. Natalie was grateful for My Unfair Lady <不懂撒嬌的女人> in allowing her acting to shine and thanked TVB, her colleagues, as well as Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) for being a friend and mentor, “I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to thank you while being on stage. [She is] a person I really like; she gives me acting guidance and always listens to my problems.” Finally, Natalie thanked her deceased mother, “Although my mom is no longer here, I’ve been thinking of you all the time. I remembered what you taught me before. I know I’m not perfect, but I’ve always tried my best in acting out different roles.”

    Best Supporting Actor: Joel Chan

Joel Chan has always been a solid actor, but his controversial relationship with heiress Florinda Ho (何超雲) had nearly ruined his career seven years ago. However, the breakup and subsequent career standstill only made Joel more determined to work harder in his TVB comeback.

Last year, Joel shined in three dramas: May Fortune Shine on You <財神駕到>, Burning Hands <乘勝狙擊>, and The Unholy Alliance <同盟>. Accepting his award on stage, Joel thanked TVB and everyone for their support, as well as his deceased father. Joel added humbly, “This moment marks another step forward in my lifelong marathon.”

    Best Supporting Actress: Rebecca Zhu

After winning Miss Hong Kong 2011, Rebecca Zhu has been appearing in numerous TVB dramas. She recently even got promoted to lead actress in the upcoming The Stunt <特技人>. However, winning Best Supporting Actress came as a surprise for Rebecca as well as viewers.

Rebecca said, “I didn’t think I would get an award! I started from nothing! When I joined the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, I didn’t know one single Cantonese word.” Reflecting on her initial struggles in TVB, Rebecca thanked executive Catherine Tsang (曾勵珍), “Thank you for calling me and expressing your concern, and telling me how to enunciate clearly and pointing out the problems in my acting.” After an awkward pause, Rebecca added, “Hope the children who grew up in Mainland China and came to Hong Kong can find success here.”

Kenneth Ma: My Favorite Male Character

Nominated ten times for Best Actor, Kenneth Ma (馬國明) posed as the strongest competitor for Vincent Wong in this year’s race. Despite media buzz and fan support, Kenneth ended up winning the My Favorite Male Character award instead for his performance in The Exorcist’s Meter <降魔的>.

Kenneth said, “I didn’t think I would get an award. Thanks to The Exorcist’s Meter‘s producer. I said that it’s hard to come across a good script in a lifetime and The Exorcist’s Meter was definitely one of them. I don’t know what to say. Although TVB told me that I can’t thank a particular person, but many female artistes ignored the notice [to dress conservatively], so I won’t hold back either! Thank you Miss Virginia Lok (樂易玲) for treating me so well although I don’t always listen to you. You’ve been scolding me in the 17 years that I’ve been here. Thank you to the cast and crew of The Exorcist Meter and everyone at TVB!”

Sisley Choi: My Favorite Female Character

Since winning first runner-up at Miss Hong Kong 2013, Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) has quickly ascended the ranks at TVB and heavily cast in many dramas. Winning My Favorite Female Character for Legal Mavericks, Sisley appeared to be shocked and her eyes grew red. She thanked many people on stage and was grateful for the opportunity to star in the drama.

    Other Awards

Mat Yeung (楊 明) won Most Improved Actor and Mayanne Mak won Most Improved Actress.  My Ages Apart <誇世代> won for Best Drama, while The Exorcist’s Meter was voted as the Global Online Favorite Drama award.

Jessica Hsuan Has Not Decided If She Would Attend TVB Anniversary Awards

Jessica Hsuan Has Not Decided If She Would Attend TVB Anniversary Awards

After her landslide Best Actress win at the 2017 TVB Star Awards Malaysia, people were betting that Jessica Hsuan (宣萱), who won the award for portraying “Mall Jeh” in the TVB drama My Unfair Lady <不懂撒嬌的女人>, would also win TV Queen at this weekend’s TVB Anniversary Awards. Jessica said she does not expect to win.

“My win in Malaysia has definitely shook my confidence,” said the 47-year-old actress. “I don’t expect to win this time.” Jessica added that she hasn’t even decided if she would attend the awards, but she already has already has an outfit prepared.

Asking if she has already casted in her TV King and Queen votes, Jessica said she voted for Natalie Tong (唐詠詩), her costar in My Unfair Lady. “She’s matured so much.” What about TV King? “Kenneth Ma! He has a pretty big chance [to win].” What if you won? “It’ll be satisfying, but I rather win it for my role in Line Walker: The Prelude <使徒行者>.”

In regard to the rumors that Jessica’s asking price went up three times after her Malaysia win, Jessica clarified, “That’s a bit too exaggerated! But it’s true that I’ve been offered more jobs. I am a free agent and I used to manage my own jobs, and things would get awkward whenever we started to negotiate about price. Now that I have a manager, everything’s been much more relaxing for me.”

She stressed that her decision to pursue acting was never for money, but for her own interest. She never thought she had to prove anything or desired to reach the top, but she did recall an experience in 2015 that inspired her to be more ambitious. “He told me I was getting old and I needed to change careers. I really want to thank him now, because he reminded me of why I’m doing this. My immediate reaction to his comment was that I didn’t agree—I felt that with different age comes different roles, but his words have now become my driving force.”

When Jessica first stepped on stage to receive her Best Actress honor at Malaysia’s TVB Star Awards, she was shaking with happiness. “It was a time for me to express my feelings. This award encourages me, reminds me that I came into the industry because I love acting, and not for the money.”

Kenneth Ma Doesn’t Believe “Love Should Be an Open Book”

Kenneth Ma Doesn’t Believe “Love Should Be an Open Book”

Although it’s an known secret that 43-year-old Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and 28-year-old Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎) are a couple, the pair prefers to not talk about their relationship in great detail. Kenneth and Jacqueline have been photographed going out on dates and often appear in promotional events together, but Kenneth does not believe “love should be an open book”. He prefers to keep some details of their relationship private.

Kenneth said, “Things are going okay [with Jacqueline]; our relationship development hasn’t encountered any problems. There isn’t really an issue with giving her [a girlfriend label]. In her interviews, Jacqueline will not intentionally bring up this topic. If we’re going to talk about it, then it would be about marriage.

“We just haven’t announced it yet, but I think everyone already understands. When we’re out having dinner together, we just let the paparazzi take pictures and we don’t really mind if people on the streets snap photos of us either. We’re pretty open about this.

“But we don’t think it’s necessary to constantly talk about it. It would be annoying if we speak about it all the time, such as when we held hands, kissed, if she comes to my home tonight to watch sports, or if I go to her house to celebrate.  It’s not necessary to give an explanation for everything because dating is between the two of us. As long as we’re comfortable with each other.”

Hoping to continue keeping his relationship semi private, Kenneth explained that he will definitely let everyone know when he gets married. However, in the meantime, Kenneth and Jacqueline hopes that everyone will only pay attention to their work.

Besides known to be one of TVB’s most eligible bachelors, Kenneth is also a family man. Always putting his family before everything else, Kenneth reveals that he is very frugal when it comes to clothes and food , but is willing to splurge on a nice home for his family. The actor expressed, “We all spend money and it’s not possible to not spend a dime on anything. You work so hard for your money, so it’s important you spend it on something you like.”
